New media legislations which will protect journalists are in the pipeline and would be in place soon.

The Zanzibar First Vice President, Maalim Seif Sharif Hamad, said major steps are taken by the Zanzibar government to ensure media friendly legislations are in place before long.

He was speaking at a graduation ceremony at the Zanzibar School of Journalism.

He said he was heartened that the question of media legislation has been widely accommodated in the final draft of the proposed new constitution of the United Republic of Tanzania.

However, he said freedom of the press should help cement and strengthen unity and solidarity among the people and that it should never be used to spread hate speech and hatred which would endanger peace and stability.

“Media owners, editors and journalists and all those who make decisions, should avoid to air programmes or publish articles which would disrupt unity, solidarity”, he emphasised.

He challenged the new graduates to use their pens to expose misdeeds such as negligence at work places, corruption, and embezzlement and fight the negative tendency of working as a routine.

They should also work to help the fight against the use prohibited drugs and HIV/Aids, he said.

He also said it was the right time for journalists to report on the developments and challenges of the rural areas.

Speaking earlier, the Principal of the school, Rashid Omar Kombo said it has registered marked progress by increasing student enrollment each year.

He said this year the number of graduates has increased to 122 from 83 of last year.

He said the school has also succeeded in publishing its own lab newspaper – titled NIAMBIEproviding practical experience to the students.

Despite the achievement, Rashid said the school is faced with a number of challenges including shortage of classrooms and equipment.

The chairperson of the school, Chande Omar, appealed to the government to appreciate professionalism and employ the school’s graduates. Report by Saumu Shaaban
