MCT expresses optimism Mwakyembe will expedite Access to Information law
The Media Council of Tanzania (MCT) has expressed optimism that the newly appointed Minister for Legal and Constitutional Affairs, Harrison Mwakyembe would facilitate the realization of the much sought Access to Information (ATI) legislation.
“We are confident that your ministry and through your committed working spirit, this legislation will be completed within a short period”, the Executive Secretary of the MCT, Kajubi Mukajanga told the minister in congratulatory letter.
Mukajanga who is also the chairperson of the Coalition on the Right to Information (CORI), congratulated, Mwakyembe for being re-elected MP for the Kyela constituency and appointment to ministerial position.
Expressing MCT’s appreciation for Mwakyembe’s appointment, Mukajanga pledged the Council’s continued committed and unwavering cooperation in promoting the media industry in the country.
He reminded the minister that MCT is an independent and voluntary institution set up by media stakeholders in 1995 with the objective of promoting the independence and rights of the media and media practitioners to ensure the attainment of high level of professionalism and responsibility in the media industry.
The Council, he said in collaboration with other stakeholders has been in the forefront in supporting the government’s efforts to enact a progressive legislation that would ensure wananchi and the media access information as stipulated by clause 18 of the Constitution of the United Republic of Tanzania.
As you are aware, the government had decided to accommodate media stakeholders in the process of Access to Information –ATI.
He invited the minister to visit MCT’s offices at an opportune date and also put forward the Council’s request to pay the minister a courtesy call at his office.
The Council attached pertinent documents, including its constitution, Stakeholders proposals on the Right to Information legislation, and analysis on government bill on Access to Information (ATI) to the congratulatory letter to the minister.
