Media challenged to utilize election report
The media has been challenged to utilize the election monitoring report produced the Media Council of Tanzania as mirror in improving its coverage.
Speaking during the launch of the report entitled Watching the Watchdog, the Chairperson of Ethics Committee of MCT, retired Justice Juxon Mlay underscored the importance of the media in the promotion of democracy.
He said the media provides platform to the people and political parties and are useful throughout the electoral process including voter registrations and campaigns.
Due to the importance of the role the media plays, Justice Mlay it pertinent the media functions ethically and professionally.
The report which reflect how the media faired in the election coverage, should also be used in covering other elections, he said.
Earlier the Executive Secretary of MCT , Kajubi Mukajanga said the monitoring reflects on how the media covered the October 25, 2015 General Election.
He said Council monitored mainstream print and electronic media and also some international media outlets.
The monitoring project he said was funded by the Department For International Development of the United Kingdom (DFID).
At the launch of the report, DFID was represented by its Governance Advisor, Zabdiel Kimambo who commended the Council for a job well done.
He explained that DFID supported the monitoring project in the spirit of ensuring the promotion of even playing field in the elections.
The invitees at the launch held on Friday April 15, 2016 included editors, representatives of the civil society and media.
