The Manual focuses on enriching the professional practice of journalism, and by extension, mass media, so as to ensure that impending elections will be credible,undoubted by any voter, candidate or observer. The delivery of such credibility is very much in the hands of the media.

The content of this book is due to coordinated efforts marshalled by the MCT Secretariat, commissioned authors, editors and development partners. For the MCT’s Secretariat, this volume was not an ad hoc project, but a well conceived and deliberate activity under its 2009 Work Plan.

This publication is the first of its kind to be prepared by the Media Council of Tanzania (MCT) aimed at setting out an articulated research agenda on media issues in Tanzania.

Training manual for Poverty Reporting in Tanzania it is a user-friendly manual that can be used by trainers as well as mid-carrer journalists intent on quality coverage of poverty issues. It attempts to look at global dimensions of poverty including international instruments and initiatives,as well as local conditions,to help the poverty writer think globally and write locally. We hope that the manual will help reporters handle poverty stories better by enabling them to put issues in context and assisting them at in-depth reporting.

This booklet provides a synopsis of training needs and gaps in media training which would be a useful guide to the Council and other institutions engaged or interested in providing in-service trainging for media practitioners.

The scope of this report is founded on a research precess and subsequent findings on the extent to which Tanzania's print media have covered poverty issues.
The demand for this kind of study hinges on the fact that the media remain pivotal in in?uencing socio-economic changes,including efforts being made by various agents to uplift people from the dehumanising spin-offs of the scourge of poverty.

The objective of this manual is to help journalists who intend to cover science and research findings become able to do so with a little more ease and confidence. It seeks to provide the necessary skills and insights into science and research reporting as a particular genre of the profession.

The 2009 report contains interesting mixture of new hopes, as well as glaring frustrations that continue to beset media industry in Tanzania.
