Editors to convene in Morogoro for a summit organized by MCT

Editors from various media outlets in the country will meet for the first time for a two-day summit organized by

the Media Council of Tanzania (MCT) starting on Monday June 4, 2012 in Morogoro.

A statement issued by the Executive Secretary of MCT, Kajubi Mukajanga, said over 40 editors have confirmed to attend the summit which will be officially opened by the Minister for Information, Youth, Culture and Sports, Dr. Fennella Mukangara.

The summit is designed to deliberate on pertinent issues in the media and explore ways of sorting and mitigating some of the emerging challenges.

Mukajanga said the theme of this year’s summit is Enhancing Professionalism and Accountability of the Media, Adherence to Professional Ethics in Newsrooms and Challenges of Editorial Freedom and Responsibility.

The summit which will be an annual event will also be addressed by the former Group Managing Editor of the Nation Media Group, Wangethi Mwangi who will share experiences of the dilemmas Kenyan editors faced during the 2007 post - election violence.

Wangethi is also a member of the Think Tank on Media Issues and Freedom of Expression of MCT.

The editors will also discuss media regulatory framework and efforts to get a better media services law and right to information act.

Mukajanga said  during the  summit editors  will collectively  share and meditate on the Dar es Salaam Declaration on Editorial Independence and Responsibility (DEFIR) prepared by the Think Tank. They will also sign the Declaration.
