Over 150 journalists, media stakeholders, academics and human rights activists will converge in Zanzibar for a
symposium on Promoting Media Professionalism and Accountability on June 19, 2012.
The symposium which will precede the annual General National Convention (NGC) of the Media Council of Tanzania will deliberate on the keynote address delivered by President Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete during the Gala Night of the Excellence in Journalism Awards (EJAT) 2011 on March 30, 2012.
The NGC will be held on the following day, June 20, 2012. Both the events will take place at the Zanzibar Beach Resort, Mazizini.
The Executive Secretary of MCT, Kajubi Mukajanga said the preparations for the two events have been finalized.
During the symposium the Zanzibar Minister for Information, Tourism Culture and sports, Said Ali Mabrouk, will launch the Kiswahili version of 2011 State of Media Report and the Dar es Salaam Declaration on Editorial Independence, Freedom and Responsibility (DEFIR).
The issues to be discussed at the symposium include trade unionism in the media whose discussant will be journalist Timothy Kitundu and another issue will be on Professionalism and what DEFIR stands for whose discussant will be Professor Saida Yahya Othman.
Media Lecturer Ayub Rioba will be discussant on the role of the media in the constitutional reform process.
The chairperson of the Ethics committee of MCT, Justice Thomas Mihayo will chair the symposium.
This is the first time both the symposium and the NGC are held in Zanzibar.
Participants of the symposium and delegates of the NGC will be arriving in Zanzibar June 18, 2012.
