Mr. Sungura Makes Staff Performance Changes at MCT, Marking 100 Days

Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, May 14, 2024—The Media Council of Tanzania (MCT), under the leadership of the new Executive Secretary, Mr. Ernest Sungura, has made a change of staff to enhance the Council’s performance and bring more productivity in the country’s media sector.

The council has hired a Finance and Administration Manager, Ms. Rehema Kongola, to fill a vacant position. Ms. Kongola is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) from the National Board of Accountants and Auditors in Tanzania (NBAA). She officially started her duties on May 2, 2024.

Additionally, the Council has appointed Ms. Ziada Kilobo as Institutional Sustainability Specialist who will be heading the MCT Zanzibar office, heading a consulting unit which is aimed at diversification of source of revenue at MCT. Previously, she served as the Human Resources and Administration Manager, a position now filled by Ms. Kongola. Ms. Kilobo is scheduled to report to the new Zanzibar office on May 27, 2024.

The council has also promoted Ms. Elizabeth Okuli to become Human Resource, Administration and Procurement officer. Previously, Ms. Okuli was the Secretary to the Executive Secretary and Assistant Administrative Officer.  She will officially assume her new responsibilities on June 1, 2024. Ms. Saumu Mwalimu will continue as the Acting Manager of MCT Programmes.

These changes occurred shortly after the new Executive Secretary completed 100 days in office. Within this period, he successfully led the Council in organizing a major conference on the Role of the Media in Ensuring Credible Elections which was held on April 30, 2024, in Dodoma, where, among other things, the participants in the conference discussed the role of the media in local government elections and general elections next year.

The guest of honor at the conference was former Prime Minister and Vice President, Judge Joseph Sinde Warioba. Other attendees included the Government Spokesperson, Mr. Mobhare Matinyi, Ambassadors’ representatives from the US, UK, other International Organizations represented included European Union, SIDA, IMS, IFES, various political party leaders (including CCM, CUF, and ACT Wazalendo), editors, journalists, non-governmental organizations, and legal professionals.
