A passionate appeal has been made to media stakeholders to contribute to sustain the annual Excellence in Journalism Award Tanzania (EJAT) in which media practitioners are rewarded for best and exemplary performance.

Speaking during the 2015 EJAT gala night on April 29, 2016, the chairperson of the competition’s organizing committee, Kajubi Mukajanga said there are challenges in organizing for the awards.

“I want to appeal to stakeholders including media stakeholders and others who believe in the awards. If we want to sustain them, it is important that each one of us see how they can contribute”, said Mukajanga who is also the Executive Secretary of the Media Council of Tanzania, the lead partner in organizing EJAT.

“Gone are the days of thinking that the Council and its partners have sponsors who can provide the much needed financial support”, he said pointing out that it is pertinent from now “we should prepare to be self reliant”.

“This,” he said, “is possible because this is what we did this year” adding that “what I want to insist is that each one of us should be prepared to contribute”.

The number of EJAT finalists for Television 2015 had increased from two in 2014 to 27 and for radio they increased by 10 to 27 while print media finalists dropped by two from 34 of 2014.

The good news for 2015 finalists is that the number of women had increased by 10 to 28 in 2015 as compared of 18 in 2014, Mukajanga said adding that the participation of community radio station in the competition has increased and that three of them have produced finalists.

More than half of the entries were from upcountry, reflecting a broader level of professional excellence not only in Dar es Salaam and other main towns but nation-wide. TBL Group Ltd
