Tanzania Daima ordered to apologise to Ludewa DC

Tanzania Daima newspaper has been ordered to apologise to the Ludewa District Commissioner, Andrea T’sere for publishing false report about him and his family.

The decision was reached by the Ethics Committee of the Media Council of Tanzania which settled a complaint raised by the District Commissioner against the newspaper.

The newspaper had published on its December 5, 2016 issue a story alleging that the District Commissioner and his family were mysteriously made to sleep in the toilet.

The Ethics Committee presided by its chairperson, retired Judge Juxon Mlay resolved during its arbitration session on July 31, 2017 that the newspaper had erred in its story and has to apologise to the DC.

The newspaper was also ordered to reimburse the costs incurred by the DC in the process of raising the complaint.

All the decision by the Committee must implemented in two weeks time.

During the arbitration, Tanzania Daima was represented by its Managing Editor and while the Ludewa District commissioner was present in person.

The committee used the occasion to caution media outlets to ensure that they always publish authentic information and should not use what is reported in social media without establishing its truth.

The Committee also advised the media to act promptly whenever they receive complaints on what they have published.
