STATE OF THE MEDIA REPORT TANZANIA 2022-2023 PRE-LAUNCHED IN KIGALI, RWANDA

 

Kigali, Rwanda. The Media Council of Tanzania (MCT) has pre-launched a State of the Media 2022-2023 Report with its findings discussed among participants from Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Congo-DRC, Somalia and Tanzania. The event was held today June 26, 2024.

The pre-launch was among activities conducted alongside four days meeting of the East Africa Press Councils (EAPC) held from June 25 to 28, 2024.

Speaking during the event, MCT Executive Secretary Ernest said that the report not only reflects the current landscape of media in Tanzania but also serves as a beacon of dedication to truth, accountability and the power of the press.

“This State of the Media Report is more than a collection of data and analysis. It highlights the challenges the media faces and the victories they achieve,” he said.

Reacting to the findings, President of United Nationale de la Press du Cong (UNPC) of North Kivu DRC Masika Zawadi Rosalie said that media in DRC Congo face similar experiences as in Tanzania, the only different is in their country media is free to express as per their constitution and media law that was enacted in 2023 but are facing economic challenges.

“Medis is free, but the question is how are they enjoying such freedom while they are not supported, they are assured of salaries which this leads to them being used by people with power,” she said.

Presenting a brief summary of the report before it was pre-launched, former MCT Executive Secretary Kajubi Mukajanga said that the report traces new development of the sector flagging appreciating trends in print, electronic and online and its main objectives is to focus attention on those development that needs enhancing and exposing factors that deterred attainment of vibrant space in the country.

The report therefore identifies critical issues which needs intervention and recommends how to generally improve the media sector.

“We are pre-launching it in Kigali at the East Africa Press Council meeting where all East Africa press councils are represented from Congo, Somalia, Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda and Tanzania. This signifies our unity and the essence for reflection on the state of the media in our East Africa member states,” said Mukajanga.
