MCT trains 50 scribes in the Isles

Within two-days 50 journalists in Zanzibar and Pemba have been sensitized on media laws in a specialized training offered by the Media Council of Tanzania.
The training in Zanzibar attended by 25 media practitioners was held on June 20, 2022 and in Pemba attended by another 25 journalists was held on June 21, 2022.
Speaking separately during the two trainings, the Executive Secretary of the Council, Kajubi Mukajanga, underscored the importance of journalists to be conversant with media laws.
“Our objective is not turn journalists into lawyers, but it is important to raise their awareness on the laws in the course of discharging their duties”.
The journalists were enlightened on the concept of media and freedom of expression, international best practices in upholding freedom of expression and media, limits of freedom of expression and laws that infringe press freedom in Tanzania.
They were also provided an overview of media laws in Zanzibar and its affects to press freedom.
Other issues learned include the press freedom violations register managed by the Council and how it works, types of violations, challenges in submitting incidences and gender mainstreaming.
The journalists were also enlightened on the Excellence in Journalism Awards Tanzania (EJAT) and its new category on national census.
In Zanzibar, two advocates Mpale Mpoki and Hassan Kijogoo facilitated on law issues while Mpoki also facilitated in Pemba. Two officials of the Media Council of Tanzaia Saumu Mwalimu and Shiffaa Hassan Said facilitated on Press Violations Register and EJAT.
