Arusha: UNESCO has reaffirmed its strong dedication to promoting press freedom and supporting independent media as the world rapidly shifts to digital platforms and faces new challenges to journalism.

During the national World Press Freedom Day (WPFD) celebration in Arusha, 29th May 2025, Michel Toto, UNESCO’s Representative to Tanzania, highlighted that a free press is essential for democracy. He acknowledged the engaging discussions and valuable insights shared at the event, emphasizing the urgent need for diverse voices and verified information in a functioning democracy. “Without sharing ideas and different viewpoints, democracy loses its essence,” he remarked to journalists and media representatives.

Toto pointed out the issues arising in today’s digital age, stressing that quality information should be treated as a resource for everyone. He noted how crucial it is for online platforms to act responsibly, helping to fight against false information and rumors.

As the media landscape continues to change, Toto called for immediate and united efforts to protect journalists, especially women, and to ensure the future of independent media. “We must pay urgent attention to the safety of journalists,” he insisted, warning that financial and political pressures are threatening many news organizations.

He urged everyone involved in the media to go beyond just talking about the challenges and take real action to safeguard press freedom. “While we have discussed what needs to be done today, we must remember that real change starts with us,” Toto stated.

He praised the Tanzanian government for being open to discussions and expressed gratitude to ambassadors, development partners, and civil society organizations like Jamii Africa for their ongoing support for press freedom. Toto encouraged journalists and media advocates to use this day to recommit to defending the rights of journalists and, in doing so, uphold press freedom for everyone.
