The Executive Secretary of the Media Council of Tanzania (MCT), Ernest Sungura, is among the heads of Media and Press Councils attending the African Media Councils meeting in Cape Town, South Africa.

Scheduled from May 14th to 17th, 2024, the meeting aims to establish dialogue among independent media content regulatory bodies across the continent and with news ombuds from around the world.

The primary objective of the meeting is to enhance self-regulation of media content in Africa by facilitating communication and information exchange among independent media councils. It also seeks to identify common concerns and explore the establishment of a network of independent African media councils.

Organized by the Press Council of South Africa on May 15th, the African Media Councils (AMC) meeting is attended by mandated delegates from independent content regulatory bodies. These bodies include media, press, and broadcast regulatory bodies with decision-making powers independent from the government, regardless of government funding.

Representatives of organizations operating in the media ecosystem, as well as guests and sponsors, will also be in attendance.

From May 16th to 17th, there will be open sessions of the conference of the global Organisation of News Ombudsmen and Standards Editors (ONO), co-hosted by the South African Press Council and Media24.

Additionally, on the same days, there will be a short afternoon breakaway meeting for mandated AMC delegates to discuss the establishment of a network of independent African Media Councils.

On May 17th, an afternoon workshop conducted by UNESCO on media and platform content regulation will take place.
